Since Russia’s invasion in Ukraine on the 24th of February 2022, over three million people have been forced to flee and seek protection in Europe. ORAM is a US-based non-profit organization with an office in Berlin, Germany and advocates for the protection of LGBTIQ individuals fleeing persecution.

ORAM is therefore searching for a Berlin-based Project Officer to lead its response to the current conflict and crisis in Ukraine. Reporting to the Senior Program Manager, this position will give you the opportunity to work directly with LGBTIQ displaced individuals in Berlin and play an important role in their journey to safety and to building a new life.

Duties include, but may not be limited to, the following:

  • Lead and manage the opening of ORAM’s first LGBTIQ Refugee Community Center in Berlin

  • Work with local LGBTIQ and humanitarian organizations to set up referral networks

  • Identify and build relationships with key partners and stakeholders in Germany

  • Help book temporary housing on behalf of LGBTIQ individuals from Ukraine leveraging ORAM's existing housing partners

  • Provide LGBTIQ displaced people with basic information on life and getting around Berlin

  • Connect LGBTIQ displaced people with available local resources and respond to and support their needs

  • Run the Community Center on a daily basis

  • Supervise volunteers

  • Provide regular reports to ORAM’s Program Manager

Desired Skills include, but may not be limited to, the following:

  • Understanding of migration within the EU

  • Proven ability to work with diverse communities

  • Familiarity with the NGO sector in Germany, specifically Berlin

  • Ability to network and conduct outreach;

  • Knowledge and understanding of issues facing vulnerable individuals fleeing conflict areas

  • Dedication to the inclusion of marginalized communities

  • Understanding of issues facing LGBTIQ communities

  • Empathy and professionalism

  • A self-starter with an enterprising frame-of-mind

  • Ability to work independently and part of a team

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English and German

  • Knowledge of Ukrainian and/or Russian a plus

  • Discipline, strong organization skills and attention to detail required
